What is the Nile?

The Nile is an African river. In fact, with a length of about 6,700 km. It is with the Amazon River, the longest river in the world. … Its two branches uniting in Khartoum, capital of present-day Sudan. Finally on its way the Nile flows into the Mediterranean forming a delta north of Egypt.

Second longest river in the world. It crosses the land of Egypt from south to north where it branches out into two branches, Damietta and Rosetta, which lead to the Mediterranean.

Moreover, it covers an area of 1.9 million km2. It extends into 10 states: Tanzania- Kenya- Zaire- Burundi- Rowanda- Ethiopia- Eritrea- Uganda- Sudan and Egypt.

The Nile originates in Lake Victoria. Intercepted by falls and depressions, it goes beyond them to soar with all its might until it reaches its natural course.

Without the Nile, all of Egypt would be desert. Only about 2.5 centimeters of rain falls per year in all of Egypt. But every summer, the river rises because of the rains at its source, far to the south, in Ethiopia. Floods cover the river valleys. Leaving sediment necessary for the growth of trees, plants and crops.

Egypt is often divided into two sections: Upper Egypt to the south and Lower Egypt to the north. The sections are so named because the Nile flows from south to north. The river flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

The landscape of southern Egypt is made up of low mountains and desert. Northern Egypt has wide valleys near the Nile and desert to the east and west. North of Cairo, the capital, lies the triangular Nile Delta. This fertile land is completely covered with farms.

What is a Nile cruise?

A truly memorable and exotic experience to visit some of the most important temples and archaeological sites in Egypt. And which are located in Luxor and Aswan. It will delight you so much there are ancient and authentic things to admire. So you will soak up the picturesque nature of this great country. Thus of these places where lived the Egyptians of the pharaonic time.

Moreover, a cruise on the most legendary river in the world, the Nile, will certainly be one of the most breathtaking circuits, if there is one. Certainly, it will be one of the most fabulous and at the same time UNFORGETTABLE cruises! If you wish, you will have the opportunity to sail slowly aboard a luxury boat circulating on the river. On board you will discover ancient Egypt, places like: Luxor / Aswan / Dendera / Abydos / Valley of the Kings / Kôm Ombo / Esna / Edfou… to name a few! But there are also other kinds of boats that you can use to go up the majestic Nile, such as the different ''feluccas'', sailing boats that are certainly less expensive, but on the other hand less comfortable than the biggest boats like the Dahabeya 4 cabins and other luxury boats. It's up to you to make your choice… depending on your budget!

What are the archaeological sites that can be visited during the Nile cruise in Egypt?

In fact the sites are different depending on the type of boat you are going to take during your cruise on the Nile in Egypt, but most classic boats allow you to visit:

First of all Luxor (The East Bank): the temple of Karnak and Luxor. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Luxor and the Mummification Museum. As well as going to the 'Sound and Light' Show at the Temple of Karnak. You can also go for half a day to visit the temple of the goddess Hathor of Dendera. Either for a day to visit the temple of Abydos as well.

Then the West Bank also called the Theban necropolis: the Valley of Kings, the temple of Queen Hatshepsut have the two most visited sites during a classic cruise in Egypt. However, there are other magnificent and little-known sites, such as the Valley of Queens, the Valley of Nobles, the Temple of Medinet Habou of Ramses III, the less preserved temple of Ramesseum of King Ramses II.

Also the Village of artisans of Deir and Medina, the peaceful temple of King Seti I, the tombs of Khoka, Sheikh abd Gourna, as well as the tombs of Asassif, without forgetting the Valley of Monkeys where the beautiful tomb of King Ay is located. who was the successor of King Tout Ankh Amun.

The temple of Edfu dedicated to the falcon god Horus, and the temple of Kom Ombo dedicated to the god Sobek (the crocodile) and to the god Haroris (Horus the great or the old)

Aswan: the Temple of Philae dedicated to the goddess Isis, the High Dam of Aswan, the Temple of Kalabsha on Lake Nasser, the old quarries of the pink garnish where the unfinished obelisk is located, the flower garden also called the Kitchener Island and the Botanical Garden, the Nubian Village, and not to be missed a felucca ride on the Nile. Also you can leave to visit the temples of Abu Simbel from Aswan.

When is the best time to take a Nile cruise in Egypt?

The best time for a Nile cruise is between November and March. It corresponds to the high tourist season of the country. You can enjoy a pleasant stay by the Egyptian river and avoid the hot summer sun. Note that during this winter period the days are short, and it is cool or even cold at night and in the early morning.

You can cruise outside this period, but it is often hot, sometimes over 40°C in summer.

What are the different types of Nile cruise ships in Egypt?

The motor boat

You can find everything you need on board. The boat is quite big, comfortable, some are better than others. In terms of compliance with hygiene measures, the services offered, how the boat is fitted out inside. Also the decorations of the boat and cabins. The food, the boat staff, and the evening entertainment.

There is a large dining room, for meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) as well as a large lounge bar and on the deck, a swimming pool and deckchairs.

It is always worth choosing the newer or renovated boats as they are better maintained.

The cabin number is often 60: 80 cabin. Well, there are also small motor boats of 20:30 cabins which are more luxurious and which are often suites.

Cruising on a sailing boat

A sailing boat of about ten meters without cabins. Or a more luxurious equivalent with cabins like the “dahabeya” or the “sandal”.

This means of transport is therefore more intimate, but less comfortable on the other hand. It is more for travelers looking for authenticity and away from the crowds.

The little feluccas

Small sailing boat, departing from Aswan to Kom Ombo or Edfu for wind reasons. Fairly spartan comfort. The advantage is its maneuverability, which allows you to stop anywhere. And above all to take full advantage of the landscape, which will allow you to discover authentic Egypt. These are the traditional boats of the Nile, these famous little wooden (and now metal) boats, sailing with the current with their triangular sail.

So we sail the old way, with the current and the wind. The boat only consists of a wooden pontoon, covered with soft mattresses for sleeping (super comfortable!).

Blankets and cushions are provided of course, as well as typical Nubian food. However, there is no cabin, toilet or bathroom! Your suitcases are stored below deck and you will spend your time on the mattresses. The format is rooted: sunrise with the sun, cat bathing or swimming in the Nile and a day punctuated by meals, the sun, swimming and landscapes.

The great feluccas

There are slightly larger feluccas with a small toilet/sink cubicle. But the boat is also much more spacious than on a small felucca. Which makes the trip much more enjoyable. It is also possible to climb on the roof of the boat, which is hard (unlike the small feluccas where there is no roof, but a canvas to protect from the sun).

The sandals and dahabeyas

They are replicas of the boats of 19th century princes and archaeologists. They are well equipped. This is the most authentic and comfortable variant, and the most expensive. The great advantage of these boats. It's that they have cabins. So we sail along the Nile with a lot of comfort.

Can we board a cruise ship every day?

No, the boats embark on certain days, so if you want to take the Nile cruise adapt the dates of your trip according to the days of boat embarkation.

Classic boats or motor boats embark for 4 nights of the cruise and 3 nights from Luxor.

Most embark Monday from Luxor and Friday from Aswan.

Some embark on Saturday from Luxor and Wednesday from Aswan.

A few boats embark on Thursday from Luxor and Monday from Aswan.

Small and large feluccas can sail according to the day of your choice. While the dahabeyas often embark on Saturday from Luxor, Sunday or Monday from Esna located 65 km south of Luxor.

Can we take the cruise between Cairo and Aswan?

Yes, it is possible to do what is called 'Long Cruise' which very few boats do, however, you can admire a magnificent landscape that is still virgin, and very beautiful sites unknown to mass tourism, the program of this cruise in principle the following visits: Beni Suif, El – Minya for visits to the tombs of Beni Hassan.

The necropolis of Tuna el Djebel of baboons and Ibis, the Monastery of Djebel el Teir. Also the temple of Istabl Antar of Queen Hatshepsut, the Islamic necropolis of Zaweyet el Amaat. After that Tel el Amarna with visits to the site of Akhenaton: Akhet Aton. Then Sohag with the visit of the beautiful temple of Abydos. And finally, Qena to visit the temple of the goddess Hator of Dendera before joining Luxor. Then, we continue to do the classic cruise between Luxor and Aswan.

Is it possible to visit the temple of Abu during the Nile cruise?

No, because of the first cataract, and which is one of six which are waterfalls, due to rocky encumbrances in the bed of the Nile. They prevent navigation on the river, but without interrupting it, and from two dams in Aswan, cruises on the Nile are between Luxor, and they cannot sail beyond Aswan.

Is it better to visit the temples of Abu Simbel during the Nile cruise in Egypt?

Yes, it is one of the most beautiful temples of ancient Egypt, and it will be a shame to visit Egypt without going to Abu Simbel, they are two temples, the big one is that of King Ramses II, and the small one built to honor and glorify his wife Queen Nefertari. Dug into the rock on the Nile, about 70 kilometers from the second cataract, they are classified as World Heritage by Unesco.

During the construction of the High Dam of Aswan in order to produce electricity, to increase the cultivable surfaces. The call for the preservation of the monuments of Nubia was launched by UNESCO. The essential principle was to move the sanctuaries out of the threatened places to expose them again, as close as possible to their original site in the same orientation, sheltered from the waters of the future Lake Nasser, and the temples of Abu Simbel were part of this rescue and that they were moved to a height to avoid drowning at the bottom of Lake Nasser.

How to go to visit the temples of Abu Simbel?

Abu Simbel is located 270 Km from Aswan about 3 hours and a half drive, so you can go by flight from Aswan, the disadvantage that it is possible not to find a place on the plane even if you have your ticket confirmed, you can also leave by car, and this is the best known way, the journey takes place during a police convoy, and you must present a police permit accompanied by a photocopy of your pass the day before departure.

The third way is to cruise on Lake Nasser, starting from Abu Simbel to go to Aswan in 3 nights, or starting from Aswan to go to Abu Simbel in 4 nights, you will visit during your cruise the Nubian temples among Wadi el Sebou 'built by King Ramses II' The Valley of Sphinxes', the Greco-Roman temples of Dekka and Mehraka, the small chapel of Beit el Wali of King Thout Mosis III, and the site of Qasr Ibrim .

What is the fun of taking the Nile cruise in Egypt?

During your trip to Egypt, the strongest point is that during the navigation of your boat you will witness the permanent spectacle of the banks of the Nile which is constantly changing. The magic happens every moment, but even more so when the sun goes down and the sky takes on a golden hue.

Indeed, you will enjoy throughout the cruise, in addition to your visits, a view of the Nile and its fabulous landscapes.

So you will observe the landscapes, you will visit the magnificent temples, and the tombs, and you will admire the sunsets, under a pleasant temperature, you just have to be on the deck of your boat in the evening and sail on the Nile is particularly pleasant, and above all to contemplate the landscapes which parade quietly.
